If you are a skier who enjoys spending most of your time on the groomed slopes in a ski resort, then carving skis are a great choice. Also known as piste skis, these are specially designed to give you grip and control on the firmer, hard-packed snow you find on the piste. Carving skis are available to all ages and abilities. The beginner piste skis are normally more flexible and easier to manage at slow speeds. Advanced piste skis usually have a core made with technical materials like titanal, graphene, or high-density wood to reduce weight and offer a higher amount of stability at high speeds.
The Difference in Carving Skis Vs. All Mountain Skis
Compared to all mountain skis, carving skis have a narrow waist and a smaller turning radius. This creates grip and makes it easy to turn from edge to edge on hard-packed snow. All mountain skis are built with softer materials and have a wider waist. This enables them to handle soft snow, choppy snow, and also some off-piste conditions. Carving skis will perform better than all mountain skis on piste; on the other hand, all mountain skis will offer acceptable performance in a wider range of snow conditions.
How Long Should Carving Skis Be?
The length of your carving skis should fall somewhere between your chin and the top of your head when they stand beside you. The shorter the skis, the easier it will be to turn, which is a feature particularly appreciated by beginners and skiers who love to carve. Nevertheless, weight is also an important factor to consider. Heavier-than-average skiers should consider slightly longer skis, while lighter skiers could go for slightly shorter skis.
