Which Gear Is Necessary for Longboarding?
Having the proper longboarding gear is crucial for achieving top performance. This is applicable whether you’re a longboarding novice or engaging in thrilling hill descents or graceful dance routines.
A complete setup comprises all that’s necessary to commence longboarding—fully assembled and ready for action. More seasoned longboarders often choose to construct their setup using individual components (more details on this below).
Longboard slide gloves are vital for certain disciplines. For downhill and freeriding, longboard gloves equipped with slide pucks aid in balancing, steering, and hand and wrist protection. Slide gloves are indispensable when your hands touch the ground during Toeside Slides, Backside Slides, Coleman Slides, and similar manoeuvres.
To maximise your longboarding experience, ensure to have a quality helmet, protective gear, and wrist guards.
Is a Complete Longboard Right for You, or Should You Build Your Own?
If you're uncertain about where to commence, opting for a complete longboard is the simplest choice. It arrives pre-assembled with harmonising components—no compatibility concerns.
For constructing a new longboard from the ground up, you'll need the following components:
- Longboard Deck
- Longboard Grip Tape (Refer to specifications to check if the deck comes pre-gripped)
- Longboard Trucks
- Longboard Wheels
- Longboard Bearings
- Longboard Hardware (If planning to use risers, ensure correct bolt length: hardware guide)
- Longboard Risers
If you wish to customise your longboard setup, explore deck and wheel categories. Mix and match parts to match your preferences regarding flex, concave, wheel size, and shape.
Longboarding Disciplines
Longboarding encompasses several primary disciplines, each with a distinct style, goal, and skill set (there’s no necessity to stick to just one discipline—we wholeheartedly embrace creativity and personal expression).
These are the principal longboard categories:
- Downhill: Emphasises high-speed descents. Participants employ aerodynamic posture and controlled slides for safely navigating steep gradients. Precision and stability are crucial.
- Freeride: Entails sliding techniques on hills, merging speed with technical command. It’s based less on racing and more on expressively controlled movement.
- Freestyle: Focuses on technical tricks, spins, and manuals, frequently performed on flat surfaces, spotlighting creativity and board mastery.
- Dancing: Involves flowing footwork and cross-steps during motion. It combines rhythm and equilibrium, often resembling a moving dance routine.
- Cruising: Primarily about ease and comfort. This is the most accessible form of longboarding, commonly utilised for relaxed glides or urban commuting.
Each discipline necessitates a specific board shape, wheel type, and setup to meet its unique requirements.
The Benefits of Longboarding
Longboarding isn’t solely enjoyable—it provides various physical and mental advantages. Similar to other board sports, it affords a robust aerobic workout while enhancing balance and coordination. Most importantly, it’s beginner friendly and doesn’t demand a substantial investment to begin.
As an outdoor pursuit, longboarding naturally encourages spending more time outdoors, breathing fresh air. Thanks to their large wheels, longboards easily navigate uneven terrain, letting you smoothly traverse city roads, park paths, or countryside surfaces.
